History of DJI Quadcopters

Some DJI Drone (Quadcopter) User PDF Manuals above the page.

DJI (SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd. or Dajiang Innovation Technology Co.) is based in Shenzhen and specializes in the design and manufacture of unmanned aerial vehicles.

It was created in 2006 by a student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology named Frank Wang Tao, who was interested in aeromodelling since childhood.

Among his associates were friends, as well as a professor of robotics. They all received a stake in the company.

Initially it was a small company with no serial production. DJI made prototypes that were quite expensive - in the region of $ 6,000. The clients were universities and energy companies that were studying the possibility of using UAVs for their tasks.

In 2010, the state had no more than 20 employees, and the amount of revenue was several hundred thousand dollars. On average, I managed to sell a couple of dozen drones a month, and there was always a lack of money.

Continuous improvement of prototypes and the emergence of new developments made it possible to reduce the cost of production, so that the cost of drones fell below $ 1000.

This made it possible to attract the attention of ordinary people: only companies and very rich people can buy drones for thousands of dollars, but a drone for a conditional $ 800 can afford a much larger number of potential buyers.

The breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of the Phantom quadcopter. This very successful model was in good demand, and revenue increased fivefold over the year. In 2013, it amounted to $ 130 million. A few years before, DJI could only dream of such a thing.

In 2014, 400,000 Phantom series drones were sold, DJI gimbals and stabilizers, as well as new drone models, are entering the market.

The staff is gradually expanding to 3,000 employees, and by 2015, according to analysts at Frost & Sullivan, DJI had taken 70% of the global civilian drones market.

At the same time, DJI bought a stake in Hasselblad, a photography equipment company.

Introduced in 2016, the Phantom 4 is considered by many to be one of the best drones in its segment. The compact drone Mavic, released in September of the same year, was also highly appreciated.
