Review of Makeblock Airblock Drone

Some MAKEBLOCK Airblock Drone User Manuals PDF above the page.

The robot designer Makeblock Airblock is a kickstarter project that has raised more than half a million dollars for its creation. This unique modular constructor allows to assemble without soldering and mechanical assembly a hexacopter (6 propellers), a tricopter (3 propellers), an amphibious car and a spider.

The modules are connected exclusively on magnets and in case of a "catastrophe" the helicopter falls apart without mechanical damage and after a minute of assembly is ready to fly again!

The main form of the Airblock robot is a drone with six rotors. The Airblock set consists of 1 main module and 6 rotor blocks with motors and propellers.

The modules are connected to each other by magnets and do not require additional mechanical mounting. Power to the motors is also transmitted through the contact terminals when connecting the modules of the designer and also does not require additional mechanical switching.

The propellers are equipped with reliable protective grilles and make the use of Airblock extremely convenient and safe.

To assemble the amphibious vehicle in the kit is a special chassis, which allows you to easily assemble a hovercraft, which can travel both on the ground and hover over the water surface.

In this mode (Water mode) 2 propellers create an air cushion, and 4 act as engines for the movement of the amphibian, turns and turns in place.

You can watch all the modes of Airblock operation in the demo video below.

Airblock equipment also includes a height barometer, an ultrasonic distance sensor, a gyroscope and a Bluetooth module. All telemetry is transmitted to a smartphone or tablet thanks to special software.

All control of the robot is also carried out through any mobile device using the application, which can be downloaded from the link at the end of the description.

The manufacturer also took care of the presentable appearance of the Airblock package - the whole robot-designer is packed in a beautiful strong box made of dense cardboard measuring 380mm x 300mm x 140mm in which even the lid closes with a magnetic latch and there is a special handle for easy transportation of the Airblock drone.

The advantages of Airblock include its fantastic endurance to mechanical damage - it can only be broken by putting it under the rink)).

The fact that it is made of a special durable material EPP (Extruded Polypropilene).

The material withstands compression and tensile loads. It is considered almost indestructible material, as even with rare damage it is very easy to recover.

In our opinion, the Airblock drone has a couple of disadvantages:

- the robot connects to the remote control (mobile device) via Bluetooth, which limits the communication range to 10 meters;

Airblock is equipped with a small capacity battery (700mAh), which has a detrimental effect on the duration of operation on a single battery charge - the flight lasts about 6 minutes, and then the battery needs to be charged.
